As we live through and try to meet the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, we face many difficult decisions. After conferring at length and considering the conditions at our venue, Long Island University, as well as travel constraints and Governor Cuomo’s ban on large gatherings, board members and staff together have decided to cancel the Left Forum 2020 conference originally scheduled for May 29-31, 2020. We at Left Forum are committed to ensuring the health and well-being of the conference participants, the public and our supporters. We have begun planning for events later this year and next. We ask that you check our website and assure you that we will be in touch soon.
Throughout the world, people are increasingly seeing the capitalist system as the problem behind economic crises, rising inequality, social divisions, climate catastrophe, and war. As a result, the world is witnessing a wave of New Socialisms Rising. But what does socialism mean here and now? What do current conditions and the histories of both capitalism and socialism teach us in order to act, organize and build alternatives. Left Forum 2020 wants to celebrate, examine and debate the new socialisms and radical alternatives that are rising across the world in order to strengthen our struggles. This year’s conference aims to discuss socialism’s different forms and interpretations, the lessons we might learn from the past, and what potential socialist futures could mean or be. To this end, we encourage and seek ideas and proposals that address related interests and concerns of building and imagining present, possible and future socialisms.
